Newborn’s First Bath: A Gentle Step-by-Step Guide for Parents
Share
Your baby’s first bath is a beautiful milestone — but it can also feel a little intimidating for new parents. Don’t worry — with a few gentle steps and the right essentials, bath time can become one of the most calming parts of your baby’s day.
Here’s how to bathe your newborn safely and comfortably:
1. Wait Until the Umbilical Cord Falls Off.
Stick to sponge baths until the umbilical stump has completely healed (usually within 1–2 weeks).
2. Prepare Everything Before You Start.
Lay out a soft towel, mild baby cleanser, a cup for rinsing, and fresh clothes. Never leave your baby unattended, even for a second.
3. Check the Water Temperature.
The ideal temperature is around 37°C (98.6°F) — warm, but not hot. Test it with your wrist or a baby bath thermometer.
4. Support Your Baby’s Head and Neck.
Hold your baby securely with one hand under their neck and shoulders while gently cleaning with the other.
5. Keep It Short and Gentle.
Baths should last no more than 5–10 minutes. Use mild, fragrance-free baby wash and rinse thoroughly.
6. Moisturize Right After Bath.
Pat your baby dry with a soft towel and apply lotion immediately to lock in moisture.
